What is good mileage?

In Pakistan, 'good mileage' depends on the vehicle class. For standard 70cc motorcycles, 55 to 65 km/L is considered excellent. For 660cc JDM hatchbacks, 18 to 22 km/L in city conditions is excellent. For 1000cc hatchbacks, 14 to 17 km/L is highly efficient, whereas 1.3L to 1.8L sedans delivering 11 to 14 km/L are considered to have healthy fuel efficiency.

How do I calculate km/L?

To calculate km/L manually, divide the exact distance driven on a specific trip (km) by the total volume of fuel consumed (liters). For example, if your trip meter shows you drove 420 km and it took exactly 30 liters of petrol to refill the tank back to the full mark, your mileage is 420 km ÷ 30 liters = 14 km/L.

How do I convert L/100km?

To convert the European standard Liters per 100 Kilometers (L/100km) to the local Pakistani standard of kilometers per liter (km/L), divide 100 by the L/100km value. For instance, if your JDM vehicle dashboard shows a fuel consumption rate of 5.0 L/100km, the calculation is 100 ÷ 5.0 = 20.0 km/L.

Why is my mileage dropping?

A sudden drop in mileage is typically caused by neglected mechanical maintenance. Common culprits include dirty or clogged air filters that restrict engine airflow, carbon-fouled or worn-out spark plugs, underinflated tyres that increase rolling resistance, bad wheel alignment, or clogged fuel injectors that disrupt proper fuel atomization.

Does AC reduce mileage?

Yes, running the air conditioner reduces mileage because it places an extra mechanical load on your engine to drive the AC compressor. This load typically decreases fuel average by 10% to 15% in larger sedans and can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 20% in small-displacement 660cc and 1000cc engines.

Does tyre pressure matter?

Absolutely. Underinflated tyres increase the surface contact area between the rubber and the road, creating substantial rolling resistance. This friction forces the engine to burn more fuel to maintain the same speed, which can degrade your fuel mileage by 3% to 5%.

Does premium fuel improve mileage?

Premium fuel (high-octane HOBC) does not directly contain more energy than regular petrol. However, it prevents engine knocking in modern high-compression engines. If your vehicle manufacturer explicitly recommends high-octane fuel, using premium fuel allows the engine ECU to maintain optimal ignition timing, thereby improving mileage.

Is city mileage lower?

Yes, city mileage is almost always lower than highway mileage. Frequent stop-and-go driving, waiting at traffic signals, prolonged idling in rush hour congestion, and constant shifting in lower gears prevent the vehicle from achieving steady momentum, leading to higher fuel consumption.

Is 12 km/L good?

For a mid-sized sedan with a 1.5L to 1.8L engine capacity (such as a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic) driving in congested city traffic, 12 km/L is considered a very decent and healthy average. However, for a small 660cc or 1000cc hatchback, 12 km/L would indicate a mechanical issue or extremely aggressive driving habits.
