How to Calculate Zakat in Pakistan (Step-by-Step)

Zakat is an obligatory pillar of Islam set at 2.5% (1/40th) of an individual’s net zakatable wealth held for one full lunar year above the minimum threshold called Nisab.

Step 1: Calculate Total Assets

Sum Cash + Gold + Silver + Business Inventory + Investments

Include cash in bank accounts, savings certificates, prize bonds, foreign currency, and shop stock at market value.

Step 2: Subtract Liabilities

Net Wealth = Gross Assets - Short-Term Debts

Deduct immediate loans, unpaid utility bills, and immediate debts due within the coming month.

Step 3: Compare with Nisab

Nisab = 52.5 Tola Silver (~Rs 168,000) or 7.5 Tola Gold (~Rs 1,950,000)

If your Net Wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold, Zakat is obligatory.

Step 4: Multiply by 2.5%

Zakat Payable = Net Wealth Γ— 0.025

Pay your Zakat to deserving eligible recipients, relatives, or verified charitable institutions.

Difference Between Gold Nisab and Silver Nisab in Pakistan

Under Islamic jurisprudence, two standards define the Nisab threshold:

  • Gold Nisab (7.5 Tola / 87.48 Grams): At a market price of ~Rs 260,000 per tola, the gold Nisab equals approximately Rs 1,950,000.
  • Silver Nisab (52.5 Tola / 612.36 Grams): At a market rate of ~Rs 3,200 per tola, the silver Nisab equals approximately Rs 168,000.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) uses the Silver Nisab for automatic bank deduction on savings accounts on the 1st of Ramadan because its lower threshold benefits more impoverished individuals in society.

Should I use the Gold Nisab or Silver Nisab in Pakistan?β–Ό

Islamic scholars in Pakistan generally recommend using the Silver Nisab because its lower threshold enables more individuals to contribute Zakat and support impoverished families. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) also applies the Silver Nisab standard for automatic savings account deductions on 1st Ramadan.

Is Zakat calculated before or after debts?β–Ό

Zakat is calculated on Net Zakatable Wealth AFTER deducting immediate, short-term liabilities (such as due loans, unpaid utility bills, or vendor invoices due now). Long-term future mortgages or deferred installments are not fully deducted.

Do I pay Zakat on gold jewellery?β–Ό

Under Hanafi jurisprudence (followed widely in Pakistan), Zakat of 2.5% is obligatory on all gold and silver jewelry regardless of whether it is worn daily or kept stored, provided your total wealth meets Nisab.

Do I pay Zakat every year on the same assets?β–Ό
